Student-alumn dinner in China and Talent Race ceremony

Posted: 3/29/2012 4:09:10 PM

It’s in the afternoon 22 March in Shanghai and the rain pours down. Rain during rush hour in Shanghai makes it almost impossible to find a taxi. Peter Hellqvist, Alumni Coordinator at Chalmers, and I are on our way to a joint event for students and alumni.

We invited newly admitted Master’s students to meet us at the Sino-Finnish Centre at Tongji University. And we were really happy to meet around 25 students to talk about Chalmers, Gothenburg and Sweden. Eric Zhang from the Swedish General Consulate joined us to provide information on how to apply for visa and residence permit.

When the information session was over, around 15 Chalmers alumni arrived. They usually meet approximately once a month in Shanghai. A very good way of sharing experiences and building a useful and important network. This evening at Tongji, the alumni welcomed the newly admitted students into the community of Chalmers students around the world. Friends are important when you’ll take a big and difficult step into the unknown future.

Professor Jan Staël von Holstein said welcome on behalf of Tongji and the Sino-Finnish Centre and Jörgen Sjöberg, Chief Development Officer at Chalmers, greets students, alumni and Volvo Cars representatives welcome to the Chalmers event.

And finally it was time for the Talent Race prize ceremony. Talent Race - a prestigious and attractive scholarship competition in cooperation between Chalmers University of Technology and Volvo Car Cooperation. The winner receives a scholarship from Volvo Car Cooperation, covering the tuition fee for a two years Master’s programme. The winner is also guaranteed participation in the VESC programme (Volvo Engineering Student Concept) which includes: summer job, master thesis project, mentorship and possible employment at VCC.

And the Talent Race winner is - Hantang Liu!

Lars Nyborg, Vice President of Product Development, Volvo Cars Shanghai, handed out the diploma and explained the importance of young talent with engineering knowledge and understanding of multiple cultures, for Volvo Cars in their future development. Hantang Liu was also congratulated by Anders Wennberg, Chief Resource Officer at Chalmers, before the dinner started.

Students and alumni from China and around the world talked about life at Chalmers and life after graduation. It was a very nice evening and hopefully all Chinese students are more prepared to step into the challenging studies at Chalmers and also in the fellowship of Chalmers!

Saturday 24 March we held a similar meeting at Peking University in Beijing for newly admitted students and alumni. See images below:

Hope to see you all admitted students at Chalmers during the Welcome Week in August! :-)

Higher Education in Space Science at Chalmers - interview with Srinivas Agashe

Posted: 2/13/2012 5:27:16 PM

from Maharashtra Times 29-12-2011

In December Professor Devdatt Dubhashi from Chalmers University of Technology went to India. In the newspaper Maharashtra Times he found an interview with a Chalmers student; Srinivas Agashe.

In the interview you can read that Srinivas Agashe passed MSc in "Space Science" from Pune University and was looking for further specialized studies through an integrated course in wireless, fiber optics and space engineering. After looking on the Internet he found that only Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden had such a course, so he applied.

Srinivas Agashe: “After reaching Sweden and joining the course I realized that Sweden has overcome an adverse environment to register progress. This is reflected also in the behavior of the people. The blue eyed swedes are strongly built and reticent but after some acquaintance become friendly and helpful. ” “The Swedish system of education is similar to the Indian. Online information is available and all procedures are web based.”

Srinivas Agashe says that all teachers are well versed in English. “Space teachers are experts. PowerPoint presentations are widely used. There are guest lectures and tours. Local Swedish students are always helpful. Sweden has modern laboratories equipment and libraries easily available for the students. There are practical work, group discussions and quizzes. Good performance in these gives bonus points. Internet is used to do homework. There is a lot of exchange between teachers and students.”

Beijing Education Fair

Posted: 10/23/2011 4:28:18 AM

Last weekend me and my collegues Kerstin and Peidi worked at the China Education Expo in Beijing. It was two very good days and we met so many nice and motivated students.

Here's Peidi and me on our way to work at the fair on Saturday morning.

Peidi is a Chinese student at our master's programme in Bioinformatics. He was a really good help for us since many of the visitors at the fair were Chinese speaking parents, looking for study abroad oppurtunities for their children.

After the fair in Beijing Peidi went to visit his parents and we really miss him here in Shanghai.

Alumni evening at the Swedish Embassy in Beijing

Posted: 10/14/2011 6:05:53 PM

Me and my collegue Kerstin from Chalmers international student recruitment team are in China for education fairs. We will stay here for the rest of October visiting four cities; Beijing, Shanghai, Wuhan and Chengdu.

This evening we went to a very nice alumni networking event at the Swedish Embassy here i Beijing. We had some Swedish finger food, kanelbulle (cinnamon bun) and Swedish coffee. At home in Gothenburg it's autumn and rainy now, but here the weather was good and we could mingle in the garden.

Here I am (in the middle) with Chalmers alumni Billy Tan (left) and Peidi Liu (right) a Chalmers master student from the Bioinformatics programme.

Tomorrow it's time for China Education Expo at the China World Exhibition Hall. We are looking forward to meet a lot of new students! :)

Meeting in Beijing with students and alumni

Posted: 4/11/2011 5:59:10 PM

Saturday afternoon we had the second event for Chalmers students and alumni in China. This time in Beijing. Twelve students attended the meeting at the Office of International Cooperation at Peking University Health Science Center.
Like in Shanghai we gave general information about upcoming important dates, the city Gothenburg, the differences in study and teaching between Sweden and China. We had a lot of time for the students' questions and thoughts both during the presentation and the following dinner. At the dinner five Chalmers alumni joined us. The all had a brief introduction of themselves and their experiences of Chalmers and living in Gothenburg. They gave the students some advice that I thought was valuable and useful. The alumni advised the students to take advantage of the time in Sweden in as many ways as possible. For example by forming study groups with other international and Swedish students as soon as possible, and start build important networks. Make friends with Swedes, visit different places in Sweden and maybe also in Europe. The alumni also said it is important that you study hard right from the start.
Altogether this was a very nice evening.

And to the students who where there:
Thanks, Peter and I really enjoyed meeting you all and we hope to see you again after the summer here in Gothenburg! :)

Chalmers students and alumi had dinner in Shanghai

Posted: 4/8/2011 7:15:47 PM

We have invited all Chinese students admitted to master’s programmes, to come and meet us on venues in Shanghai and Beijing. Yesterday it was time for the Shanghai event. Thirteen students, some accompanied by a relative, showed up at Club Maya in French Concession. We talked about what’s different studying at Chalmers in Sweden, compared to China. And we informed about the Swedish academic year, way of study, learn and work.
Ms Helen Cai from the Swedish General Consulate in Shanghai gave important information about residence permit and how to apply for student visa. [http://www.migrationsverket.se/info/151_en.html]

After the meeting some of the Chalmers alumni joined us at the restaurant and we had a nice dinner together. The menu was typically Swedish with smoked salmon, meat balls with mashed potatoes, pea soup and for dessert pancakes with whipped cream. The students I talked to about the food said they liked it, but found the taste a bit strange and unfamiliar. That’s how I can feel about the Chinese food sometimes.

In Shanghai Chalmers have a very strong alumni association, CING China [http://www.cingchina.com], that arranges activities for the university graduates. This is a very good way to keep the relation to the university and build networks with other former students. It's so fun to meet people who have lived in Gothenburg in many years and now are back in China. Some of those who graduated from Chalmers also stayed in Sweden and worked after their studies.

At this evening in Shanghai the students got a lot of time to talk to the alumni, to get answers to all their thoughts about studies at Chalmers. I really hope to see them all in Gothenburg at the Chalmers Welcome Day on August 23.
